2017 MPRG café commission, on display throughout 2017-18

Live drawing in the MPRG cafe Wednesday 5 July – Thursday 13 July

MPRG presents an exciting new commission featuring Gosia Wlodarczak, an artist whose work the Gallery acquired through its National Works on Paper in 2008. Gosia will undertake a 9-day durational performance drawing across the windows, walls and ceiling of the MPRG café space. This ephemeral drawing project will transform the space, activating the surfaces with handmade marks as Gosia captures moments in time and responds to the forms she encounters while drawing.

For Gosia, drawing is the basis of her whole practice and extends across performance, interactive situations, installation, sound and film; which she refers to as cross-disciplinary drawing. ‘I draw my environment as I see it, in real time – tracing and re-tracing the visible. I only draw what I see. Seeing, the act of drawing and the drawing itself are evidence not only that I exist, but also that I exist in the present moment. I never draw from imagination. The immaterial (energy and time) are converted into the material (pigment forms line). Every single glance produces a drawn shape. Every drawn shape both embodies and documents corporeal existence.’

Gosia has an extensive exhibiting history both locally and internationally and has recently published a limited edition artist book featuring numerous frost drawings on glass including work made at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Moscow Biennale and Singapore Biennale.
