Benalla
Art Gallery
Programs on Sunday 29
October 2006
3 – 3.45pm From Here to Eternity
Join Suzie Shears, Director of the Victorian Tapestry Workshop,
and hear about this exhibition
The Victorian Tapestry Workshop was established in 1976 and is regarded
as a world centre for one of western civilisation's oldest and richest
art forms. In her guided tour, Suzie Shears will provide insights into
the collaborative process between artists and weavers, surrounded by magnificent
tapestries currently on loan from the Victorian Tapestry Workshop. And
forget the old hunting scenes and garden views – these tapestries
are for the here and now.
3.30 – 4.30pm The New Musicians
Children’s Concert
(everybody gets a prize!)
Every year Benalla’s budding musicians present a series of concerts
at the gallery. The milestone achievements can carry the audience from
the joys of Mary’s lamb to a reasonably confident Claire de Lune.
Parents, siblings and family friends make up the greater audience, but
everyone is welcome. The end of the concert means a windfall of prizes
and balloons. Free, including the memories and the disarming charm.
Hourly 10 – 3pm Benalla PS 31 presents.......
Ned Kelly and the Nolan Tapestry
Benalla PS 31 has been undertaking a deep analysis of the meaning of
the enigmatic “Glenrowan” tapestry on permanent display at
the Benalla Art Gallery. Find out why Ned is so big compared to the other
figures, why there is a baby in the picture and what the grumpy old man
is doing standing outside his shed in the picture’s background.
You will be amazed.

‘Get into Art!’
with Australian Rules: around the grounds
In this era of football professionalism, where the analysis of matches, coaches
and players extends the parameters of the code into seemingly ever-expanding
levels of complexity, the MGA has brought together photographers who capture
the action away from the media spotlight. Australian rules: around the grounds
features the work of five photographers who are represented in the MGA’s
permanent collection: Donna Bailey, Paul Dunn,
Rennie Ellis, Grant Hobson and Jesse
Marlow.
With images of hopeful young indigenous players training in the desert, to
cheer squad stalwarts supporting their teams under drizzling Melbourne skies,
this exhibition provides a range of perspectives on the sport and its social
contexts. Connecting the world of footy with the raw emotion and eccentric personalities
of the game, these photographers grasp the wider social significance of the
game and reveal the passion, spirit and vitality of local communities.

the World: books and ideas celebrates books as keepers of ideas, knowledge

The changing face of Victoria
One of the State Library of Victoria’s roles is to be a custodian of
Victoria’s memory. Much of its collections record and reflect upon the
people, the places and the events that have shaped life here from the time of
first contacts between Europeans and Aboriginal people through to today.
The changing face of Victoria exhibition brings many of these objects
and stories to light through an ever-changing display of pictures, manuscripts,
maps and objects ranging from key historical artefacts to items from daily life,
including Ned Kelly’s armour.
