Opening Hours
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 10am to 5pm

Tuesday: CLOSED
Saturday and Sunday: 12pm to 5pm


There is an additional entrance and exit at the rear of the building for deliveries and as alternative access for visitors requiring wheelchair or pram access. This is reached via the signed service road on the eastern side of the building, press the security intercom for access. A lift is available to the museum. Service animals are welcome.


Castlemaine Art Museum
Founded in 1913, the Castlemaine Art Museum has a nationally significant collection of Australian art and fascinating historical artefacts reflecting the early history of the Mount Alexander district. The beautiful art deco building, dating from 1931 with several extensions since 
then, is a work of art in itself.

The Gallery presents an engaging program of curated and touring exhibitions and cultural experiences.


Permanent Collection
The Castlemaine Art Museum has always specialised in Australian art. The collection has strengths in major works of the late 1800’s and the Edwardian era, with traditional landscape painting strongly represented, and a growing collection of modern and contemporary art.  The Gallery also holds a significant collection of Australian ceramics, established with support from the Estate of Sir John Higgins and his sister, Catherine.

The CAM also houses a collection of historical artefacts reflecting the early history of the Mount Alexander district, numbering over 4,000 objects. The collection can be viewed online here: 


Gift Shop
The Castlemaine Art Gallery & Historical Museum has a gift shop featuring Central Victorian and Australian designed giftware and jewellery. 


Getting to the Gallery
Castlemaine Art Museum is a short one minute walk from the Castlemaine Post Office on Barker Street, or a five minute walk up Kennedy street from the Castlemaine train station.

Vline Bendigo trains stop at Castlemaine, check the timetable here.

Connect to the Victorian Goldfields Railway to travel between Maldon and Castlemaine by historic steam train. 

By Car
All day and two hour parking is available on Lyttleton street.
