Whitehorse Art Space
Whitehorse Artspace, located at the magnificent heritage icon – Box Hill Town Hall – first opened in June 1998. The yearly exhibition program provides public access to a vast range of historic and contemporary works from the Whitehorse City Council Art Collection, as well as other special exhibitions such as work from local Whitehorse artists as part of the Invited Artist Program, and touring exhibitions.
The Whitehorse Art Collection represents a significant community, cultural and educational resource for all. The Collection is of historical significance with a core of works created in the late nineteenth century. Painted ‘en plein air’, some of these Australian Impressionist works were created at the Box Hill Artists’ Camp (1885-88).
Established in 1927, the Collection comprises works by significant artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth century; and contemporary works by living artists completed in a variety of media including paintings, photographs and original prints, ceramics and textiles. It also includes commissioned site-specific sculptures.
The Whitehorse Artspace provides a wide range of merchandise representing artwork from the Collection. From the in depth local history of the Whitehorse area (Suburban Heartland) to the enlightening tale of the Artists' Camp at Box Hill (Prelude to Heidelberg), to a lovely art card, there is something for everyone.
